Description
“Beneath the Canopy” – Oil painting – Bongo
The bongo (Tragelaphus eurycerus) is one of the largest antelopes in the rainforest.
I spent 2 weeks in the heart of the Cameroon rainforest to find and observe this majestic, colorful, wild and shy antelope. Just a two-day drive from the nearest town, the Central African rainforest is the 2nd largest forest massif in the world and stretches over five countries: Cameroon, Gabon, Republic of Congo, Democratic Republic of Congo and Central African Republic.
What strikes you first is the extreme humidity and density of this forest. As soon as you pass the vegetation wall bordering the tracks, you enter a world of its own, made up of noises, smells and sensations never experienced before. This is no longer the Africa I know, it’s something else. And it’s only the beginning of a sensory experience that will amaze me, then terrify me, and finally exhaust me.
In the end, what I wanted to convey in this painting was this incredible experience. The painting’s main subject is not so much the Bongo as the forest that draws you into its maze of elephant tracks. The composition directs the viewer’s eye, the mystery takes you away, you’re in the painting, and the only escape is this source of light.
About the Artist :
Stephan Alsac is a contemporary hyper-realistic painter. His paintings, most often in oil, depict animals with an astonishing realism akin to photography. The idea here is not to reproduce a photo, but to sublimate the animal and make it “truer than life”.
If you’d like to immortalize a moment, a Safari memory, order an Original Painting in the size and painting style that suits you.
Contact Stephan Alsac to discuss your painting project. He’ll work with you to define the animal subject you want to enhance your interior.
